This part 2 will cover Dr. Tang Bin’s views and experiences with digital marketing, as well as some suggestions for small to medium-sized business owners.

“I think that there are still many people who are not very clear with what digital marketing is. It not only helps e-commerce but can also help all businesses from different industries. As long as you need your business to expand, or want to reach more people digital marketing can help your business.”

Digital Marketing Vs. Traditional Marketing

“Digital marketing includes website design, Google ranking optimization, paid advertising, and more. It is compared with traditional ways of marketing which are newspaper advertisements, flyers, radio and TV commercials. The main advantages of digital marketing are two crucial things. First, digital marketing allows you to track and measure the effectiveness of an advertisement, even to the level of the keyword. Second, the advertising fee is not spent just once, but average to the day, it can be adjusted day-by-day according to the effectiveness of the ad. These two aspects of digital marketing, are critical components of a strategy that traditional marketing simply cannot achieve.”

Common Digital Marketing Myth

“People often tell me that digital marketing is expensive, and you need to spend way too much money; this is in fact, a myth. The reason why so many people think this way is because they are executing their strategy the wrong way from the beginning. For example, I see 95% of websites not collecting and analyzing their data right from the start. With that much lack of data, then, of course, they will not make the correct decisions and optimization to achieve the best advertising results. The cost should decrease as you continue to collect & analyze data to optimize your campaigns.”

Dr. Tang’s Digital Marketing Strategy

“To do a good job with digital marketing, I’ve summed it up this way: know, precise delivery, full monitoring, and continuous optimization of your own knowledge.” By taking full control you can certainly improve the return on your digital marketing investment. I have always said that digital marketing is not magic, but sometimes it feels like it. There are some magical moments. For example, one of my ads can sell one software every 5 minutes, and once a day every day until about 2:00 PM there is a person who goes to my website and orders more than $10,000 worth of software. For more than 1 month, my advertisement cost is less than $0.02, if that’s not a magical moment, then I don’t know what is!

A Combination of Art & Science

“Digital marketing is like fishing. Just as there are up and downs in the results, you have to know when to target your fish and the behavior of your fish. By having a strategy, and an accurate understanding, you can know how much you can catch each time. This is both an art and a science. Digital marketing is a science,  and it’s also a digital game. The more data you have, the more profitable you can be. So far, I have managed and spent more than $35 million in advertising costs.”

“Second, digital marketing is also an art that requires your artistic and creative skills. This is reflected in the way you design your website, image ads, text ads and social media. A good website should have a good user experience, and provide visitors with the information needed. A good advertisement should also be able to make people unforgettable and stimulate customers’ strong desire to buy without letting people realize that this is an advertisement.  I can give you an example to illustrate this. I have promoted an anti-virus and anti0trojan software. I found that when people have computer problems, they search “Microsoft,” So I bid on the keyword “Microsoft” and wrote an ad — “Is your computer broken? Microsoft recommends you download this anti-virus software…” As you can imagine the software become very popular.

The Differences of eCommerce in China and North America

“Domestic eCommerce is mainly based on third-party platforms, such as Taobao and Jingdong. eCommerce in North American is basically based on self-operated websites. Although Chinese sellers open a lot of stores on Amazon, local businesses still use their physical shops. In addition, due to cultural differences, China and North America, domestic websites are mostly fancy, while North American websites are relatively simple.”

The Critical Mentality For Outstanding Digital Marketing Results

“When we are in a new country, we must first have the right attitude. We must be able to take it, let it go, and have the courage and determination to start again. We must continue to learn every day. Renewing our own knowledge and repeatedly practicing to master a unique skill can make us untouchable. We must clearly know our strengths and weaknesses, as well as always being up-to-date with the latest economic development trends, to integrate our skills into the most promising industries/sectors.”
